Dr. Heinrichs-Graham Receives New R21 Award
Dr. Elizabeth Heinrichs-Graham was awarded an early career R21 project from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders in April 2023. The project aims to determine the impact of mild-to-severe hearing loss and the role of hearing aid use and fit on multiple facets of language processing in children using a cutting-edge multimodal neuroimaging approach coupled with advanced behavioral and neuropsychological measures.
Children with mild-to-severe hearing loss are at risk for significant language delays compared to children with normal hearing, and language deficits are exacerbated by poor hearing aid fitting and inconsistent hearing aid use. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unknown, as very few studies have examined how such hearing loss affects the brain dynamics serving language processing in these children.
